Algorithmic Lights
The Meandering Ribbon
The first variation presents a continuous, sinuous ribbon that floats effortlessly through the space. Characterized by a naturally twisting geometry, the structure creates a rhythmic visual flow across the ceiling. It is envisioned in a matte, translucent foil material which acts as a soft diffuser. This choice of material allows the light to glow gently from within the folds, highlighting the complex curvature and adding a sense of ethereal lightness to the interior.
The Glass Cloud
The second concept explores volumetric density through a closely packed aggregation of ellipsoids. Composed of elements in varying scales, the installation is manipulated by an undulating control wave, giving it the appearance of a dynamic, floating landscape. The proposed material is glass, designed to maximize the interplay of reflection and refraction. Each ellipsoid acts as a lens, creating a sparkling, sophisticated canopy that transforms the ceiling into a sculptural focal point.
Computational Genesis
The form-finding process for this installation was driven by advanced computational design using the Kangaroo physics engine within Grasshopper. By utilizing physics-based simulations, the geometry was not merely drawn but allowed to “settle” into its final shape through the calculation of virtual forces and equilibrium. This digital craftsmanship ensures that the resulting structures possess a natural, organic logic, bridging the gap between mathematical precision and biological fluidity.
